A one inch squeeze is plenty. The Bust measurement is important to achieve the correct up-lift for the period. Busts can squeeze any where from 2" up to 4", possibly more, depending on the flexibility of the bust. The more "squeeze" you get, the more cleavage. Too much "squeeze" can be uncomfortable. Also there is not room inside the Bodice for very much bust. Therefore, you must lift and pull the bust upwards. If you're only squeezing some, you may be able to lace first and then pull up, but if you are squeezing a lot, then you may have to pull up before finishing the lacing.
